Excessive Yarn? Easy Striped Crochet Cowl to the Rescue!

The Blissful Bits Cowl is the perfect scrappy yarn project. It utilizes 5 different DK weight yarns, only about 21-23 grams / 50-54 yards per color. It’s perfect to use up scraps, has beautiful stitch definition, and will keep you warm and stylish.

Whether your stash is overflowing or you just want to showcase some really beautiful coordinating DK (3) yarn, this pattern has got your back!

What You Need

DK Weight Yarn – 254-270 Yards /115 g Total
Color A: 54 yds (23 g)
Colors B, C, D, E: 50 yds (21 g) each

This is the perfect project to showcase your leftover yarn or some really special mini-skeins. For my first cowl, I used 5 shades of purple wool for an ombre effect. For my second cowl, I only used 2 contrasting wool colors. All the yarn was in my stash for way longer than it should have been, so I hope this pattern also helps you work down your stash a bit.

Hook – I – 5.5 mm or size needed for gauge.

Other – Yarn needle, scissors, tape measure.

I didn’t block this project. While you definitely can, I didn’t find it to be necessary.

The Stitches and the Difficulty

You will use single crochets, extended single crochets and half double crochet slip stitches (also referred to as yarn over slip stitch) in this pattern. I have categorized this as an easy (level 2) pattern. This is a very relaxing pattern and once you get the stitches down, you’ll find it easy to work on while you chat, listen to your favorite audiobook, or binge-watch the show of your choice!

A few of my testers said that the half double crochet slip stitch was a new stitch to them, so here is a video that I created for a different pattern that shows you how to do that!

Check Out the Options

My testers did an amazing job hooking these cowls up in record time–less than a week. I was really hoping to be able to show the cowl worked in 1 color, 2 colors, and all 5 colors. My testers (Leslie, Angela, and Michelle) all delivered!

The point is, you have options, and you can create a gorgeous cowl whether you have a couple of half-skeins leftover or scraps of many projects.
