The Ultimate Crochet Pattern Checklist for Designers

Read on to find out how the Crochet Pattern Checklist came about!

When I started out as a pattern designer back in 2018, I had already been creating my own patterns for YEARS. I wrote them down on the backs of envelopes and in scratch pads and post it notes and remade earrings, scarves, skirts, and more. One day, frustrated with my Etsy shop, I started searching shops that I loved that had high sales numbers. I am sure you can imagine what I found–the shops that had digital products were raking it in.

I put my thinking cap on. After all, I did go to college to fulfill my dream of becoming a writer. And even though I wasn’t writing the great mystery series of pioneer life that I had dreamed, I could still put that degree to good use! I rememberd back to my Magazine Publication class at George Fox University. The only two students in the class who got published (well, that I remember anyway) were an 11 year old (he was way smarter than the rest of us traditional college students) who got something in Ranger Rick and a girl who wrote a knitting pattern! WHAT? Why hadn’t I thought of this a couple of decades earlier?

I Jumped in, Skirt First!

So, long story just to say, I jumped into pattern writing even though I didn’t have much of a guide. I really wanted a crochet pattern checklist that I could read through, choose what applied to my pattern, and feel confident that I was including everything I needed to. Later on down the road, I found Pam, the Crochetpreneur (She has some fantastic resources for new designers–be sure to check her out if you haven’t already.). But at that moment, I was flying free and making it up as I went along.

I had spent the previous couple of years testing patterns for every designer who would let me. I connected with Jennifer Percival and Michelle Ferguson. So, I tried to imitate the good things I saw in their patterns and asked a lot of advice from them. But, really, I was just making it up as I went along.

Here’s a look at that very first pattern I wrote!

Now, 8 years later…I am absolutely excited to use the expertise that I have gained and the experience that I have as an English and writing instructor and mentor trainer to be your WRITING RESOURCE! I have created an amazing Crochet Pattern Checklist that will give you the confidence and keep you from stumbling blindly through your pattern writing!

Introducing the Ultimate Crochet Pattern Checklist

The checklist is divided into 6 categories with 8 items for you to consider including in your crochet pattern, and some that you absolutely can’t publish a pattern without!

  • Basics — Things that all crochet patterns need to have.
  • Materials — An extensive list so that you won’t leave anything off.
  • Notes — Ideas on what to include in your notes section so your pattern is as clear as possible.
  • Visuals — A list of all the different kinds of photos and visuals you can include in your pattern.
  • Pattern and Assembly — What to cover in these sections including some items that are often forgotten or not well-explained.
  • Additions — All those little extras that give your pattern and your business the boost to professional that it needs!

The checklist also has a place for you to write the pattern name, dates written, tested, tech edited, and published so that you can keep it for your records. The 1-page checklist is an invaluable resource that I want to offer you for free for becoming a Bliss This Edits newsletter subscriber.

“It’s an extremely valuable resource for new pattern writers, I wish I had something like that when I was just starting. It’s also very useful for established designers to keep track of their writing progress. Thanks to this checklist I made a note to never assume makers just know all the techniques required, for example blocking, I plan to include more detailed instructions from now on.”Natalia of Natali’s Crochet
