I’m on a ROLL with purses, friends. It’s true, I can’t stop designing them. I guess they do go really well with crocheted skirts and earrings. If you’re looking for a QUICK make this fall, this is the crochet handbag pattern you NEED. It is quick, fun, and fashionable.
For this newest purse pattern, I stuck with bulky (5) weight yarn. OF COURSE, I fell in love with Color Made Easy from Lion Brand Yarns. BUT WHY OH WHY does everything I love get discontinued? I’m cursed! If you have found a GREAT substitute yarn for Color Made Easy, go ahead and let me know! I’d love to use something similar on a future design.

If you’re anything like me, you have about a million things you need to carry around every day. I REALLY love my crocheted purses, but sometimes I shove a whole lot in those bags, and I needed a design that was guaranteed not to stretch out at the bottom and lose its shape.
How to Keep that Bottom Flat
For that reason, I researched a super cool way to keep the bottom FLAT and sturdy! You’re going to LOVE it! This is totally optional, but I think you’ll be convinced. It’s an inexpensive and practical method of stabilizing the bottom of your handbag.
You can find plastic canvas at any craft or hobby store or order it easily on Amazon. In addition to the plastic canvas, you’ll want 3 buttons. I used fun buttons that I found in my antique button stash, one that is 1 1/4″ and two that are 5/8″. The 5/8″ buttons are purely decorative, so you can choose to leave them off. The larger button is functional, so you’ll want to be sure to find a button to close the flap on the purse.
Tester Photos of the Heidi Crochet Handbag Pattern
I chose to use 2 different colors on my handbag. All my testers used just one color. In fact, I happen to think the handbag looks GREAT either way! The fuchsia pink purse was created by tester Karen. The burnt orange purse was created by tester MacKenzie.
My favorite thing about this purse is the texture. I think you can see how gorgeous it is in the tester photos. Alternating rows of my 2 favorite (This week’s favorites, anyway!) stitches gives you this lovely striping, and I can’t get enough of it! WHAT ELSE can I create using this stitch repetition? OH, the ideas are flowing!
