How to Wear Crocheted Skirts!

One of the most frequent questions skeptics ask me is, “What in the world do you wear under crocheted skirts?”

“HA!” is usually my response because it seems so obvious to me! But I’ve been a skirt wearer since the 70s (That IS BEFORE I CAN ACTUALLY REMEMBER, just FYI!!). Not everyone is aware of all the options, so here they are detailed for you so you can put together the perfect outfit! It’s easy to comfortably and modestly wear crocheted skirts, I promise.

Leggings

This is the easy choice for year-round use of your crocheted skirt! I have no idea if leggings are “in” or “out,” but they work well! My daughter will often grab thick tights in place of leggings to wear under her crocheted skirt as well.

I love wearing leggings under my skirts because it keeps me warm. That’s not something I have to worry about in the summer, but fall, winter and spring, it pretty much rains ALL the time. I hate having bare cold legs. The leggings work to both keep me warm and to keep me modest. You can’t feel exposed with the “holes” in your crocheted skirt if you’re basically wearing pants under them!

Shorts

I started wearing shorts under my skirts in about the 2nd grade. It made flipping on the bars on the elementary school playground possible without giving everyone a look at my undies! I never really dropped the habit (even though there are definitely no gymnastics occurring these days), and I instilled it in my kiddo. She wears shorts under all her skirts and dresses.

I prefer a cotton knit bike-short style. I finally found one that was NOT Lycra and did not have weird stripes or pockets. HA! My daughter will wear whatever comfy shorts she grabs from her drawer. She’s not picky at all!

Slip

How old fashioned do I sound if I say, “Wear a slip under it.”? Are slips even still a thing? I think so. They do the job; that’s for sure. You can get all styles, colors, and lengths of slips! I usually go with knee length because most of my skirts hit right at the knee or just below.

Skirt or Dress

That’s weird right? But I do it. I have plenty of skirts from back in my (ahem) thinner days. They still fit (sort of), but they’re a bit more form-fitting than I’m comfortable wearing by themselves. I have a few solid colored, knit fabric dresses/skirts that work well as slips. Check your closet. You might already have the perfect undergarment to wear under your crocheted skirt!

See that black top? It’s actually a dress doing double duty as my shirt and my slip!

Bathing Suit

Wear crocheted skirts over your bathing suit for a great cover up at the beach or pool! We haven’t BEEN to a pool in almost 2 years, and the beach in Oregon is mostly just for wind (HA!). As soon as I get my dream Hawaiian vacation, I promise to update this post with an appropriate photo of skirts over swim suits!
