Small Heart Free Crochet Pattern
Last year, I released the All Heart Home Décor pattern that includes 3 sizes of easy to crochet hearts. All you need to know are half double crochet and single crochet stitches. That makes this a fairly simple pattern to make.
This year, I decided to give you the smallest heart pattern for free here on my blog. And, did I mention that it’s quick? In less than 20 minutes, you can whip up one of these sweet hearts!
Options!
There are so many ways you can use this crochet heart:
- Use as a coaster for your favorite mug.
- String 5-10 together for a Valentine’s bunting.
- Sew/stitch 2 hearts together, leaving the top open to make the perfect holder for a Valentine’s gift card.
- Find a perfect tiny stick and attach the heart for a mini wall-hanging
- Add a long chain to hang it as an essential oil diffuser (Although it doesn’t emit as much odor overall as a mainstream diffuser that you can purchase, this may be a good option in a car or small 1/2 bathroom. Simply find a place to hang your heart and add a few drops of your favorite essential oil every couple of days!).
- Sew onto a patch for a pair of jeans or the elbows of a favorite sweater that might be wearing thin.
- Whip up a few as mini washcloths for a beautiful spa set.
- Applique on any item including afghans, quilts, clothes and more!
What other ways can you think of to decorate with the small heart? Drop your ideas in the comments!
While the original pattern calls for Bulky (5) weight yarn, I used worsted for the coasters. Really, you can use any weight yarn and an appropriate hook to create a variety of sizes! I used Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton in the sample here. It’s one of my favorite 100% cotton yarns to work with for home décor, bags, and garments.
Small Crocheted Heart Pattern
Materials
• Worsted (4) weight yarn, up to 37 yards
• 4.0mm (G) hook
• Yarn needle for weaving in ends
Gauge
18 hdc x 14 rows = 4″ x 4″
Finished Size
With worsted weight yarn and a G hook, you can expect your crocheted heart to be approximately 4 1/4″ wide and 5 1/2″ long.
Stitch Key
ch = chain stitch
hdc = half double crochet
sc = single crochet
sc3tog = single crochet 3 stitches together
sl st = slip stitch
st(s) = stitch(es)
Pattern Notes
• All directions are written in US Crochet Terms.
• When estimating yardage needed, err on the side of caution. The estimate given in the Materials section is only a general guide. Note that different yarn weights and hook sizes will use different amounts of yarn.
• Heart is worked from the bottom up. Each curved top is worked separately.
• Ch 2 does not count as a stitch. Work first stitch(es) in each row in the same stitch as the ch 2.
• When edging with sc stitches, I found it easiest to place 1 st in the side of each row. Approximately every 3 rows, I placed an extra stitch. You may find it easier to place more or fewer edging stitches around your heart. Just
make sure you are consistent and do the same number of stitches on each side.
• This pattern can be made with any yarn and appropriate hook size. A lighter yarn and smaller hook will result in smaller hearts and less yardage used.
