Granny squares are never going out of style, so you might as well make them! The Granny Square Ruffle Bookmark is a quick and fun make. These are perfect for gifting to your favorite booklover with a gift card to a bookstore or a book from their favorite series. While designed with size 10 cotton crochet thread and a 2.5 mm hook, you can really create these with any size yarn and hook to make even taking a break from reading look good! Abbreviations and Stitch Key
- ch – chain
- dc – double crochet
- MC – magic circle
- RS – right side
- sk – skip
- sp – space
- st – stitch
- STsc – stacked single crochet
- WS – wrong side

Special Stitch Instructions
STsc (stacked single crochet) – insert hook into indicated st, yo, pull through st, yo, pull through 2 lps on hook, insert hook into vertical leg of st just created, yo, pull through st, yo, pull through 2 lps on hook.
Stacked single crochets are easier to work into when you join at the end of your rounds. If you don’t feel comfortable using this stitch, you can substitute with a ch 3 that counts as a dc.
Materials
- Curio, Artiste, Aunt Lydia’s or Lizbeth Size 10 Thread –20-30 yards
- 2.5 mm hook – This hook set is my new favorite. Find it on Amazon!
- Aleene’s Stiffen Quik Spray (optional)
- Blocking board
- Plastic wrap or wax paper
- Pins
- 2″ square piece of cardboard
- Needle
- Sharp scissors
Completed Size
When using size 10 cotton thread and a 2.5mm hook: 2 3/4” x 2 3/4

Notes
- Pattern is written in US crochet terms.
- Pattern is worked in turned rounds.
- Even numbered rounds are RS.
- STsc counts as a dc in st counts.
- Parentheses ( ) indicate stitches that all belong in the same stitch or space.
- Brackets [ ] indicate stitches that will be repeated the number of times indicated and bolded brackets [ ] are around longer series of instructions that will be repeated the indicated number of times.
Instructions
Make MC.
Round 1: (WS) Working into MC, ch 1, STsc, 2 dc, [ch 2, 3 dc] 3 times, ch 2, tighten MC, sl st to STsc – 12 dc, 4 ch-2 sp.
Round 2: (RS) Turn, (STsc, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in ch-2 sp, ch 1, [(3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in ch-2 sp, ch 1] 3 times, sl st to top of STsc to join – 24 dc, 4 ch-2 sp, 4 ch-1 sp.
Round 3: Turn, (STsc, 2 dc) in ch-sp, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in ch-2 sp, [ch 1, 3 dc in ch-1 sp, ch 1 (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in ch-2 sp] 3 times, ch 1, sl st to top of STsc to join – 36 dc, 4 ch-2 sp, 8 ch-1 sp.
Round 4: Turn, (STsc, 2 dc) in ch-1 sp, ch 1, [(3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in ch-2 sp, [ch 1, 3 dc in ch-1 sp] 2 times, ch 1] 3 times, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in ch-2 sp, ch 1, 3 dc in ch-1 sp, ch 1, sl st to top of STsc to join – 48 dc, 4 ch-2 sp, 12 ch-1 sp.

Round 5: Turn, (STsc, 2 dc) in ch-1 sp, ch 1, 3 dc in ch-1 sp, ch 1 [(3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in ch-2 sp, [ch 1, 3 dc in ch-1 sp] 3 times, ch 1] 3 times, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in ch-2 sp, ch 1, 3 dc in ch-1 sp, ch 1, sl st to top of STsc to join – 60 dc, 4 ch-2 sp, 16 ch-1 sp.
Round 6: Turn, sl st in ch-1 sp, [sk dc, 5 dc in next dc, sk dc, sl st in ch sp] 20 times around the square, sl st in first sl st to join – 100 dc, 20 sl st.
Fasten off, and weave in ends.
Blocking
Spray lightly with water or stiffening spray. Straighten edges and pin to blocking board. If you use stiffening spray, protect your blocking board with wax paper or plastic wrap. Let the bookmark dry.
Tassel
- Cut a 10″ length of matching or contrasting thread. Set aside.
- Wrap thread around a 2″ piece of cardboard 25-35 times.
- Cut one end of the wrapped threads. (This is your tassel.)
- Tie a knot around the tassel with the ends of the 10″ length of thread.
- With another length of thread and needle, wrap tightly around the tassel, hiding the knotted ends. Hide the ends by weaving through the tassel and tie off.
- Trim tassel ends.
- Attach tassel to one corner of the square.
