Free Granny Stitch Crochet Tablerunner Pattern

This unique take on the granny stitch is a really fun addition to your crocheted home decor. Written for one size, you can use the tips to adjust the length of your runner to make a mini- or maxi- version. While rated an intermediate pattern, adventurous beginners who have a strong foundation should be able to make this without a problem. Detailed video-tutorials will help clear up any confusion!

Special Stitch Instructions

STsc (stacked single crochet) – insert hook into indicated st, yo, pull through st, yo, pull through 2 lps on hook (first sc made), insert hook into vertical leg of st just created, yo, pull through st, yo, pull through 2 lps on hook (second sc made).

Note: Stacked single crochets are easier to work into when you join at the end of your rounds. If you don’t feel comfortable using this stitch, you can substitute with a ch 3 that counts as a dc.

Puff – (Yo, insert hook in indicated st, yo, pull up lp) 3 times, yo, pull through all 7 lps.

Gauge

Not essential unless using same thread and attempting to match final size.

6 repeats of (3 dc, ch 1) = 4″ & 6 Rounds (including Row 1) = 4″ across.

Notes

  • Pattern is written in US crochet terms.
  • Pattern begins with one row and is then worked in both turned and unturned rounds.
  • STsc counts as a dc in st counts.
  • Parentheses ( ) indicate stitches that all belong in the same stitch or space.
  • Brackets [ ] indicate stitches that will be repeated the number of times indicated.
  • The beginning ch is a multiple of 4 (4 for the pattern repeat + 3 for the additional sts on either end + 1 for the turning ch. Whether you want your runner longer or shorter, just make sure that your starting chain is a multiple of 4.
  • The 1st granny-st round after the color-changing Puff rounds will make that round stick up, but the 2nd round after that will pull it back down.
  • In the 2nd granny-st round after the color-changing Puff rounds, work 1st and 3rd dcs over ch-sp in previous round and 2nd dc over ch-sp and into middle sc from 1 round below.

Instructions

With A, ch 104.

Row 1: (WS) Working in back bump of chs, STsc in 2nd ch from hook, *ch 1, sk 1, dc in next 3**, repeat from * to ** until 2 sts remain, ch 1, sk 1, dc in last st – 77 dc, 26 ch-1 sp.

From this point forward, work in rounds. Color change rounds (B, C, D, E, F) are not turned. All other rounds that are worked with color A are turned.

Round 1: (RS) Turn, (STsc, 2 dc) in ch sp, *ch 1, sk 3, 3 dc in ch-1 sp* repeat from * to * until 1 st remains, ch 2, sk 1, 3 dc around the post of the last dc, begin working up the foundation ch, ch 2, sk 1, 3 dc in ch-1 sp, repeat from * to * until 1 st remains, ch 2, sk 1, 3 dc around the post of the last dc, ch 2, sk 1, sl st to top of STsc to join, tie off A – 162 dc, 50 ch-1 sp, 4 ch-2 sp.

Blocking Your Granny Stitch Crochet Table Runner

Spray lightly with water. Straighten edges and pin to blocking board. Let the tablerunner dry. Alternatively, pin to the blocking board and use a hand-held fabric steamer to block your tablerunner.

This video may help you if blocking is a new concept. Note that Stiffening Spray is not necessary.
