Finished Size & Yardage

With Cotton Polyester Cord and 5.5mm (I) hook: 7.25″ x 6.5″ (100 yards)

Materials

  • Cotton Craft Cord (.04″ / 1 mm thick)
    • 75% Cotton, 25% Polyester
    • 138 g /100 yds
    • 100 yards
  • I – 5.5 mm hook
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle
  • Blocking mat and pins
  • Spray bottle with water

Abbreviations & Stitch Key

dcCL = double crochet cluster

ch(s) = chain(s)

dc = double crochet

hdc = half double crochet

lp(s) = loop(s)

fCrab = forward crab stitch

RS = right side

sc = single crochet

sl st(s) = slip stitch(es)

sk = skip

sp = space

st(s) = stitch(es)

WS = wrong side

yo = yarn over

Special Stitch Instructions

dcCL (double crochet cluster) = Working into same st throughout, [Yo, insert hook into st, yo, pull up lp, yo, pull through 2 lps] 2 times, yo, pull through 3 lps on hook.

fCrab (forward crab stitch) = Insert hook into indicated st, yo, pull up a tall lp, twist hook counter clockwise ( ), yo, pull through all lps. Note: This stitch is also refered to as the twisted single crochet.

Notes

  • All directions are written in US Crochet Terms.
  • Pattern is worked in turned rounds.
  • Directions in brackets [ ] are to be worked the total number of times written in the pattern.
  • Odd numbered rounds are RS; even numbered rounds are WS.
  • Ch 2, dc at the beginning of rounds counts as one dcCL.
  • Ch 1 at beginning of rounds does not count as a st.
  • St repeat is multiples of 3 + 1 for the beginning ch, and multiples of 3 for the pattern repeat. Use this if you wish to add or subtract width to bag and adjust yardage as necessary.

Gauge

13 sts x 10 rows = 4″ x 4″

Alternating rows in pattern st with odd rows in sc and even rows in dcCL, ch 2, sk 2.

Note: Gauge is not essential for this project. Finished size will depend on yarn and hook chosen.

Ventanitas Bag Body

Ch 22.

Round 1: (RS) Working into back bump of ch, sc in 2nd ch from hook and each across, turn and sc up the other side of the foundation ch, sl st to first sc to join– 42 sc.

Rounds 2-3: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st around, sl st to first sc to join.

Round 4: (WS) Ch 2, turn, dc in first st (counts as dcCl here and throughout), [ch2, sk 2, dcCL] 13 times, sl st to first dcCl to join – 14 dcCl, 14 ch-2 sp.

Round 5: Ch 1, turn, [2 sc in ch-2 sp, sc ] 14 times – 42 sc.

Rounds 6 – 17: Repeat previous 2 rounds 6.

Rounds 18 – 20: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st around, sl st to first sc to join.

Round 21: Ch 1, turn, fCrab in each st around – 42 fCrab.

Ventanitas Bag Strap

Yo, insert hook into next sp between fCrab sts (3 lps on hook), [remove hook from 2nd and 3rd lps (but hold lps in place), yo, pull through lp, insert hook into 2nd reserved lp, yo, pull through lp, insert hook into 3rd reserved lp, yo, pull through lp] until desired length is achieved. Remove hook from loops, cut yarn, thread needle, sew strap onto opposite side of bag.
