You don’t need more than a few yards of thread or yarn to make this impressive 1-round crochet earring pattern. These earrings are so quick to make, they’ll fly off your hook. They are idea for markets, gifts, and to have in every color to match your entire wardrobe.
Chispa is a Spanish word that means spark or gleam. The Chispa Earrings are just the spark that you need! The best part is that you don’t have to be an expert at crocheting with thread to make a small, delicate and impressive pair of earrings. Even when worked in worsted weight yarn, they look great! Recommended Yarns and Hooks
Use all different sizes of yarn and thread! Shop your stash, & definitely use your scraps! If you aren’t sure where to start, here are some of my recommendations:
Curio 10 – 100% Mercerized Cotton with 1.5-1.85mm hook: 1.75″ x 1.75″
This is my go-to thread for earring making. If you have not worked with thread before or you have a hard time making tight stitches, start with the smallest weight thread or yarn you feel comfortable with and work your way down. One thing to keep in mind about thread: the higher the number, the thinner the thread!
Curio 3 – 100% Mercerized Cotton with 2-3mm hook
Curio 3 works up very nicely, has great stitch definition and is a thread that is a bit easier to start out with. You won’t be disappointed with the results.
Animation – DK – 100% Mercerized Cotton with 3-3.5mm hook
If you’re looking for a DK weight cotton, this has amazing stitch definition. It’s smooth and easy to work with–unlike some other cottons, and it holds its shape really nicely.
CotLin – DK – 70% Tanguis Cotton, 30% Linen with 3-3.5mm hook
This is another one that is soft but not too soft, holds its shape but isn’t stiff or rough on your hands as you work it. It makes a nice pair of earrings.
Dishie – Worsted – 100% Cotton with 3.5-4mm hook
If you love the idea of crocheted earrings but hate the idea of working with thread, start here with a quality worsted cotton. Since this is only 1 round, you won’t end up with a too-large, floppy earring. It’s the perfect compromise!

Notes
- All directions are written in US Crochet Terms.
- All sts are crocheted in one round into the MC. Watch this video for my No Fail Magic Circle technique.
- Gauge is not essential for this project, but tighter sts will result in an earring that holds its shape better.
- When crocheting into your MC, keep your tail long enough to adjust (pull tight) the MC at the end.
- When slip stitching to complete the earring, insert your hook in the FIRST sc from the back to the front, pull the lp of your last st through and complete your sl st on the back side of the earring.
- I recommend making both pieces first then adjusting/tightening the MC of each piece at the same time. This ensures that you make them a similar size and shape.
- This pattern can be worked in any size crochet thread or yarn and appropriate hook. Experiment with different size threads/yarns and hooks to achieve smaller or larger earrings.
This video will help you with the Magic Circle. I call it my No-Fail Magic Circle.
Instructions
Make 2.
Round 1: MC, ch 1, working into MC, sc, ch 4, 2 sc, 3 hdc, 4 dc, 4 tr, ch 3, sl st into the first ch of the ch 3, 4 tr, 4 dc, 3 hdc, 1 sc, sl st to the first sc. Fasten off.
Make both earrings before tightening MC. Pull the tails to tighten the MC so that both earrings are the same size. Weave in ends and trim tails.
Stiffen Earrings
Place on wax paper on a flat surface or blocking mat. Spray both sides of earrings with stiffening spray. Adjust shape (pin to block if desired). Wait for earrings to dry.
Assembly
Open the loops on the ear-wires to the side with your flat nosed pliers. Slip the ch-4 loop into the open loop. Close the ear-wire loop to the side with the flat nosed pliers.
Your earrings are done! Enjoy!
